Air in the system and water on the pad are opposite problems.

One gets pulled in before the pump, the other gets pushed out after it. That single distinction does most of the diagnostic work for you.

Bubbles coming out of the returns and a puddle under the equipment are the two most common complaints that have nothing to do with chemistry, and they get muddled together constantly. They are not two versions of one fault. Air gets pulled in on the way to the pump. Water gets pushed out on the way back to the pool.

Most of this guide is about telling you what you are looking at. Some of it ends in a repair call, and Blue Flag does not do repairs, so it will be clear about which parts are which rather than steering everything back toward a booking.

The one distinction

Draw a line at the pump.

Everything between the pool and the pump is under suction. It is being pulled on. Everything from the pump onward to the returns is under pressure. It is being pushed. Every symptom on this page sorts itself once you know which side of that line it sits on.

A gap on the suction side pulls air in, because air is what is on the other side of it. That same gap will not drip a drop when the pump is off, which is precisely why suction leaks are so hard to find. A gap on the pressure side pushes water out, leaves visible evidence, and is usually easy to spot in daylight.

Air, and where it gets in.

Low water in the pool

The most common cause on the list and the only free one. When the water line drops toward the bottom of the skimmer opening, the skimmer starts gulping air between waves and sending it down the line.

Check this first, every single time, before touching anything on the pad. A hot dry Texas week can drop a pool enough to start it.

Baskets and the pump lid

A skimmer basket packed with leaves, a full pump basket, or a pump lid o-ring that has dried out and flattened will all let air in.

The lid o-ring is a genuine homeowner item: clean it, make sure it is seated properly, and keep it lubricated with a pool rated lubricant rather than anything petroleum based.

Further up the suction line

If the water is up, the baskets are clear, and the lid seals properly, then air is entering somewhere along the suction plumbing or at the pump shaft seal.

That is leak detection, and it is real work to trace properly. It is also the point where this stops being something to solve by trial and error.

Water on the pad

  • Under the tank band or clamp: the tank o-ring is the usual answer. It is a wear part and it flattens with age and heat.
  • From the multiport valve, particularly during or right after a backwash: often the gasket inside the valve.
  • From the drain plug or the air relief assembly on top: seals and threads, and occasionally a cracked plastic housing.
  • From the pump body or underneath the motor: a shaft seal, which is a repair rather than a maintenance item.
  • From the tank body itself: a crack in a filter tank is not repairable in any way you should trust. That one is a replacement.

A leak that appears only when the pump runs is pressure side. A leak that is still there with everything switched off is gravity finding a hole below water level, and that is a different and more serious conversation.

The honest boundary

Where a clean helps, and where it does not.

Some of that list overlaps with what a deep clean already covers. The tank o-ring, the drain plug seal, the air relief assembly, the bands and clamps: all of it gets eyes on it during a Blue Flag teardown, because opening the filter means handling every one of those parts anyway. An o-ring that has flattened or cracked gets flagged while the tank is open and easy to reach, not after it fails on a Saturday.

What a clean does not do is trace a suction leak, reseal plumbing, replace a pump seal, or fix a cracked tank. Those are repair calls. Blue Flag does deep filter cleans, green to clean rescues, and Pool School, and nothing else, so hearing that plainly is more use to you than having somebody take the job and work it out on your equipment pad.

Bubbles only come out for the first minute after the pump starts. Is that a problem?

Usually not. Air trapped in the tank has to clear at startup, and a short burst that settles down is normal behavior. Bubbles that keep coming steadily the whole time the pump runs are a suction leak worth chasing.

Why does my pump lose prime overnight?

Air is getting into the suction line while the system is off and water drains back. It is the same family of fault as continuous bubbles, and the water level and pump lid o-ring are still the first two things to rule out before anyone goes looking further.

Can I open the filter myself to check the o-ring?

Only with the pump off and the pressure released first through the air relief valve on top, and never while the gauge still shows any pressure at all. A filter tank under pressure stores a serious amount of energy, and lids and clamps have injured people who skipped that step. If you are not certain, that is a very reasonable place to stop.

Do you fix leaks?

No. Blue Flag does deep filter cleans, green to clean rescues, and Pool School, and that is the entire list. What you will get is a straight read on what is leaking and what class of job it is, which is usually enough to make sure your next call is the right one.

Can air in the system make the pressure gauge read wrong?

Yes, and it causes a lot of false alarms. Trapped air makes the needle read high and jump around. Bleed it off through the relief valve before taking any reading you intend to act on.

Sort which side of the pump it is on first.

Tell us whether it is bubbles or water, and whether it happens with the pump running or stopped. Those two answers usually name the part before anyone drives out.
